For me it’s feels more like 1% engineering and 99% process and permitting most days. I’m not as wise or aged as Blair (yet) but I agree completely with
the sentiments. When I started here 18 years ago, I do recall seeing Dick Trudell doing a lot more “real” engineering in the same office I occupy now.
I’m glad the new Governor is acknowledging our profession this week. The world certainly does need more common sense and engineers are full of it.

The sad epitaph is when I first started practicing in 1973, 80% of what I did was engineering, 20% was permitting. Now the tides have changed, the majority of our efforts are
driven by the regulatory process and permitting, and fewer hours are devoted to true eingineering with the goal of saving client’s money in construction.
When I started a wise sage told me, remember the good old days. Some things never change!
