It’s been a very long time since I read it, wasn’t it also telepathic?
There is historial precedent : http://www.archivesalberta.org/odd/moose.htm , http://www.chezmaya.com/insolite/moose.htm
There’s a more modern one around that’s been thoroughly debunked as Photoshopped.
All of these appear to be from hand-raised moose adopted as orphaned calves. Per Wikipedia, the Soviets attempted to domesticate moose in the 30’s, unsuccessfully.
