Rough back
of the envelope calculation is that, under High Guard rules,
compared to a J1 ship, your J3 ship is using an extra 26% of
the hull for larger jump drive, larger power plant, and jump
fuel
The
J1 ship uses that space for cargo and passengers, which
generates revenue.
Unless the J3 ship is
subsidised, it's got to charge more to make up for the
loss of income.
(And, related, if you are
running a high J ship on a J1 route, you're probably
going to end up bankrupt.)

Of course it doesn't make sense to use a J1+ capable ship on a J1 route except under some special & specifically extraordinary circumstances.
However, using the CT 'Merchant Prince' supplement's trading rules, I found it that it wasn't very difficult to set up profitable 'circuits' w/i the S'Marches for a standard-design J3 Passenger Liner w/ a small but significant cargo capacity.
None of those routes would've been possible w/ J1 or J2 ships w/o 'void' jumps.
