If you get the tag right. If you don't, you have to check, re-try, and repeat until you get
one. With a machine-gun you can see immediately that you missed, and correct your
fall of shot (and if you hit and didn't immediately realise and kept firing, well, no big
deal).

A lot of this stuff will be quite useful in a tight niche, and outside it is a solution looking
for a problem. Of course the developers need a pile of money to get most of this stuff
actually operational, so they try to market it as being as widely applicable as they
possibly can.

ObTrav: Just about any vaguely feasible piece of high-tech and not actually practical
equipment can be justified in the 3I and other Traveller states this way - it's inventor
had a really slick sales pitch, and got money for their brain-child.
