A lot of this stuff will be quite useful in a tight niche, and outside it is a solution looking for a problem. Of course the developers need a pile of money to get most of this stuff actually operational, so they try to market it as being as widely applicable as they possibly can. ObTrav: Just about any vaguely feasible piece of high-tech and not actually practical equipment can be justified in the 3I and other Traveller states this way - it's inventor had a really slick sales pitch, and got money for their brain-child.
