     It looks like the Marines adopted it in 2011
 (Rheinmetall seems to
     be pushing it as having been battle tested by the USMC)
 so before
     that they were both making the same choice - possibly
 because there
     wasn't an option until then.

Didn't someone else mention that other countries had purchased 'vanilla' HE  rounds for their Rheinmetall 120's.

Perhaps some of those countries were already using them?
