be fair, in the Whovian universe, it is ENTIRELY possible,
even plausible that all three versions are both real and
not-real.
Time travel is
tricky; remember, per official DW canon, New York between
about 1930 and 1955(?) is no longer reachable by the TARDIS
due to multiple time-changing events in the time stream.
(Even though this was just a handwave to say goodbye to Amy
and Rory)

Well, I was referring to the 'old regime'...
The book was written back in the '80's before the original series was cancelled & way, way before it was revived.
I lost interest/moved on after the original series ended & have never been able to get into the successors.
I imagine things have gotten a lot more 'complicated' since then.
