Which is what inspired me with my
speculation. All sides in the Ancient's war seem to have
been very thorough about destroying all targets with
military significance, so it seemed strange that a large
cache of "defence shield generators" had been left
intact. But if these devices were actually "carburator
parts" - with it never having occurred to the Ancients
in question that they could be repurposed as defense shields
- then their survival makes a bit more
sense.

Well there's also the question of just when the 'scrubbing' occurred.
I've read where G'Father (that 'carazy old man) emerged from his 'den' more than once after the end of the 'BIG ONE' to fix things up a little.
And then from CT Adv 'Secrets of the Ancients' he says to the adventurers 'I forgot about that' when he hears how they found their way into his 'retreat'. May he 'forgot' about a lot more than that?
p.s. One thing has long bugged me about his little 3system/3parsec 'pocket universe' There are at least 3 stars w/i it & what happens when their light/radiation goes out & then comes around back? After all it's no more than 3 parsecs in any direction & it's been over 100,000 since he created his pocket-verse.
