If you wanted to observe a planet without being seen, assuming you had a stealthy enough ship (and assuming that in this case the stealth technology worked), which would be the more advantageous location: The L-1 (between the planet and the sun, about 1.5 million km in an Earth/Sol style system) or the L-2 (beyond the Moon's orbit, again, about 1.5 million km in an Earth/Luna/Sol style system)? I can see that having the sun to your back, the L-1 scenario, would possibly provide some EM interference, but it also might backlight you to visual observation. The L-2 scenario, though, put you in a position where the planet was outlined by the star and you'd have EM issues working against you.
