Frankly I enjoy both 'just winging it' (hey, isn't that why ancient tech is *really* for? ;-) ), & also reading attempts to 'rationalize' the TU. After all, not all of the sci-fi writers were "hacks, etc." but it's also true that their knowledge was woefully ignorant by cureent standards. However, I suspect that 100 years from now scientists will look back on us in a similar manner that we do wrt scientists 100 years ago & say something like, "they did well with what they had but they just didn't know what we do today".
I've often wondered how a conversation 'tween Sir Isaac Newton & a time-travelling current-day high school physics student would go when the subject of relativity came up...

No, I honestly don't. However, that's
not at all the reason why I
