What it does is change 'tumbling' into 'not tumbling'. The thing to understand is that thinking of an object as both 'spinning' and 'tumbling' is wrong. An item is only ever spinning about a single axis; if you add a tumble, what you've done is change the axis of spin, but it's still only spinning around a single axis. This puts it into the case of asymmetric spin.
