Spacecraft, no. Hulls are pretty cheap and so are maneuver drives. Each m^3 of space typically only adds a small amount to hull and environmental costs. Cross-section area does not much affect performance for most purposes. Combat spacecraft may be smaller to reduce profile, but that's not usually an important factor either. Starships, yes. Jump drives are based on total ship volume, and are horribly expensive compared with most other ship systems. Each m^3 of volume requires both extra jump drive cost and extra fuel tankage, on top of any other costs incurred. Spaceboats will also usually be cramped since they are typically carried aboard starships and count toward their volume requirements. - Tim
