I've looked at this repeatedly over the years because I like ePUB also, but
each time I find the same deficiencies: ePUB doesn't handle images or
tables well.

There's unfortunately no good solution for phones; they're just too small -
but most tablets can handle the PDFs nicely; I load out the A4 versions on
my Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 and read them in Cantook (formerly Aldiko). Some
tablets may be shaped better for using the US Letter/ANSI A version, but
the page layout is designed to present the same appearance for all of the
content no matter which you use, and only minor differences on the covers.
