  1) the lesson to be learnt from the story.

  2) a code of behaviour.

 The idea of being taught a moral lesson by the referee
 reminds me of two experiences, both bad.

 huge difference between playing an adventure with a moral
 and having a moral inflicted on you. I mean just because you
 have a moral like, the grass is always greener on the other
 side, does not mean that you have to seek the greener grass
 but having the illusion might make a game much more

As far as playing Traveller(tm) goes, I 've always found that 'playing it straight', either as a ref or PC, was always bound to throw the other participants off-balance as they searched & searched for the 'trick' or other insundry 'flim-flam' that never materialized..
