For some reason, almost universally on Earth, national defense services
have at least two and occasionally more sets of rank titles. Often, the
same names are used for ranks at differing levels of the hierarchies of
different services, and in at least one language, there is a term that
indicates an assignment that may not be held by a person who is entitled to
use that same term as rank.
Even national services that notionally are unitary still maintain different
sets of rank titles for differing components.
Canonically, this differentiation extends to the Imperium itself. Should
it? If not, what should be the unified table of ranks? (Ideally, there will
not be any rank title that is also used by persons of other rank in a
specified position.)
