I'm not sure why; consider how much 'business' is handled on the golf
course in the US, and I've heard suggestions that the sauna has a similar
role in Scandinavia, and the public baths ditto in Japan.

The point in any case is to get to know the people in question in an
informal situation, but one where there are still some social rules. The
country club (even if you don't play golf), the Victorian club occasionally
seen in e.g., the Sherlock Holmes stories, all serve this purpose, and it's
even seen at "third-party" events, such as a company seasonal party to
which customers are invited - it becomes an opportunity for the customers
to network with each other, as well as with the host.
