Crottled Greeps, and other edible(?) things...
Jeff Zeitlin 06 Jun 2023 22:27 UTC
I'm sure that if I mention David Jerry Nivenpournelle's _The Mote in God's
Eye_ [TMiGE] and _The Gripping Hand_ [TGH], and Jerry Pournelle's
daughter's sequel, _Outies_ [O], many of you that read this list will know
exactly what books I'm talking about.
One tidbit that was 'dropped' in one of them - I honestly don't recall
whether it was [TGH] or [O] - was Sir Kevin Renner's technique for getting
the locals to be willing to talk to him: He'd go into a local restaurant
that served something ... unusual ... and order it. This was illustrated
when he ordered Crottled Greeps, and 'broke the ice' by needing to be
taught how to eat them properly.
To riff off a bank commercial [Capital One] that's recently had a run in
the United States, "Never mind what's in your wallet, what's in your
kitchen?"
Post about some of the unusual dishes in your Traveller universe - what are
they, how are they prepared and served, and how do you eat them? If they
can be redacted into a form that can be implemented in a present-day
kitchen and safely served to your gaming group (preferably without
requiring the chef to be licensed, like for fugu), include that, as well.
Interesting-enough and complete-enough postings will be borged for the
Freelance Traveller Cookbook.
