I'm not sure using either the Frontier Wars is a good example since
unlike a normal war of conquest, the Zhodanai never fought the war for
that purpose; they fought it to keep reminding the Imperium that this
was the limit to their spinward expansion.  So they didn't win a
decisive victory because the Zhodani never allowed them the opportunity
because  to the Zho it was never about victory, it was all about
stinging the Imperium enough so that they knew "no farther" really meant
"no farther".
