Minimal use of force is generally included for philosophical or legal
reasons.
Shaolin Monks were Buddhists. They didn't *want* to kill you because it
would damage their personal karmic journey (yah, I'm mixing religions here).
Didn't mean they wouldn't kill you if that was the only way to stop you.
