Victory is about 200 yards off the route I take to work each day and I don't know how many times I've taken the tour as it used to be the standard thing we'd show visitors to the area. In fact on one occasion I nearly caused a bomb scare as a Swedish friend I went to visit and he'd put the soda stream (gas) bottle I'd just got refilled in his camera bag. Foreign accent + gas cylinder + what's still a commissioned warship got some people very excited. (Not in a good way...) But make an interesting Traveller incident... It was also interesting to me that the tour changed over time as new knowledge about history was discovered. For example, when I was a kid we were told the lower deck (below the waterline and thus no guns) was painted red because it was used as a hospital in battle and the red colour made the blood look like water. Later research could find no evidence that that was true so they stopped telling us it. Sadly, I believe they've just stopped doing formal tours and you now get a printed sheet that guides you round. Although by now I could probably do the tour myself. The ob Trav is obvious, with a 'heritage' warship in system, or in orbit, or on the ground that tourists can visit. Locals joke it's been renovated, refurbished and repaired so many times across three centuries that none of the original ship remains. Others tease visitors about it being , technically, still an active warship which could get recalled to duty in a crisis. Meanwhile it's full of interesting bits of history: very low deckheads (ceilings), an early TLx plasma cannon, an old holotable (formally used for battle planning) but which was also known to be punishment spot, a plaque on the deck where the last, very famous, Captain 'fell'. (Cue lots of jokes from tourists about anyone would fall over a plaque like that...) tc >
