Way back when cars, their seats, and their seat belts were rather more
primitive and less safe than today, and friend of mine got a couple of
tears in his spleen (minor enough that they healed and he didn't need
his spleen removed) from his seat belt. However, as without it he'd have
been thrown forward either onto and old-style steering wheel and shaft
(crushed ribs, possible impalement through his chest) or out of the
windscreen and into the tree he ran into, I think he was okay with that.
Like the vaccine, his seat belt didn't entirely prevent damage, but it
sure as hell reduced it by a massive degree.
