Things *can* sometimes take longer (a LOT longer) than anticipated. I recall reading an article in the, rather conservative, US Naval Institute's 'Proceedings' mag c.1977 discussing the USN's at-that-time current program to 'replace the traditional bridge'. The article mentioned that the 1950's CGN 'Long Beach' had incorporated a high-speed elevator to allow the Capt to rapidly transit from the bridge to a CIC (combat info ctr) w/i the hull. p.s. back in the mid-90's a discussion arose on one of the old UseNet newsgroups shortly after the PRC announced that they were going to buy the incomplete a/c carrier orphaned after the USSR collapsed. Most folks held the opinion that w/i, at most, 5 years, the PRC would have a fully capable warship that could hold it's own against the USN's best. One guy in particular said he'd be 'very surprised' if it took longer than that 'cuz it really wasn't that difficult a project. I wonder how surprised he was when the PRC *finally* got the thing out to sea? -------------------------------------------- On Wed, 5/28/14, Peter Berghold <xxxxxx@gmail.com> wrote: Subject: Re: [TML] Meta Deck LayoutForATigres To: xxxxxx@simplelists.com Date: Wednesday, May 28, 2014, 6:20 AM I have long scoffed at the idea of Star Wars with their flying bridge design on a pedestal high above the rear of the ship. If I were an adversary that would make quite the tempting target. I will not be surprised that US Navy warship design transitions away from a bridge in such an exposed area with the exception of peacetime sailing. Con and combat operations would in my vision be controlled from a space deep inside the hull. I think you're on the right track Doug. Shame on me for not mentioning it. “ ”Bother!”, cried Pooh, slapping another magazine into his AK-47.” LOL! As soon as I saw that Mongoose’s Fighting Ships not only had the Tigress (!), not only the Plankwell (!!), but also the Kokirrak-class (!!! one of which we have at Tavonni!) I knew I HAD to buy this book. ;-) ;-) I never thought anyone would ever map out the thing. Sorta like Marc probably thought no-one would ever stat all the worlds in the Imperium, let alone the Imperium and all surrounding empires. %-O In the Traveller lecture I did recently I showed that off (after explaining what a UWP was) along with travellermap.com. You could hear the collective jaws of the audience drop. It was a real Total Perspective Vortex moment. I still love Jennell Jaquays’ comment to me that she’s surprised no-one has come up with better, more interesting ship pics than the ones she drew up at her kitchen table 30+ years ago… Ah, well that's because she drew the real things. I mean those ARE the ships! :-) tc ----- The Traveller Mailing List Archives at http://archives.simplelists.com/tml Report problems to xxxxxx@travellercentral.com To unsubscribe from this list please goto http://www.simplelists.com/confirm.php?u=RHIP1WUkWYOkimkOJSmuSRrbb1pu2Qxq -- Peter L.
