Cryptids? Jeff Zeitlin 02 Jan 2021 19:13 UTC

From Lexico (the OED on-line):

==========================================================================
cryptid (X-SAMPA: /'krIptId/)
NOUN
An animal whose existence or survival is disputed or unsubstantiated, such
as the yeti.
==========================================================================

The existence of cryptids may be hypothesized from the presence of
'evidence' not otherwise explained, e.g., shadowy shapes on photographs,
supposed tooth or tool marks on surfaces, etc.

Sometimes, the supposed evidence is authoritatively explained, such that
the cryptid hypothesis is left unsupported - but quite often, once a
crypted is invented, it takes on a "life" of its own, and there will be
people that believe in its existence even without real evidence.

Very occasionally, the supposed cryptid is shown to exist, as a known
entity, possibly common, possibly rare. Sometimes, the evidence is shown to
be a hoax, deliberately created to 'stir up' the cryptid hunters.

That's what this post is asking for: Invent a cryptid that is claimed to
exist in YTU - describe what is "known" about the cryptid, describe the
"evidence" of its existence, and provide a 'mundane' explanation of the
evidence. If the explanation is an extant animal, an encounter table for it
would be appreciated.

As the list does not handle attachments well (and the digest not at all),
if you have "drawings" of the supposed cryptid, or of the mundane
explanation (if e.g., a plant or animal), please indicate so in your
posting. I will be collecting the cryptids with an eye toward printing them
in Freelance Traveller, so if you indicate that you have them, I'll email
you off-list to request them.

As usual with stuff I ask for with an eye toward publication, the sooner
the better, but there's no deadline.
