Well, in this case, my character was trying to establish trust and
insinuate himself in the circle of his dinner guests, as a mole.  His
motivation to do so - putting himself at risk, and compromising his
personal honor and principles - was to thwart their conspiracy and
prevent another catastrophe, like the one that had (very recently)
nearly wiped out that last culture.

So this normally honorable man had that little square of funeral bread
to remind himself why it was necessary to become a spy, to befriend
people nominally on "his side" with the intent to betray them later, and
so forth.
