Since gravity *is* so relatively weak, it's not all that much of an

the manipulation of gravity through such means, rather than the use of
gravity itself.

I always thought that the science behind gravitics, jump space, repulsors, dampers, and all that comes from some unified force theory, and an ever deeper understanding of that. Thus 'gravitics' is just what everyone calls it because the first useful result of this new physics was contragav (and thus air/rafts and flying cars for everyone).

Yes. IMTU, I put it:

"Way back in the dim mists of galactic pre-history - not even the oldest extant race knows when or where - Somebody developed a Grand Unified Theory Of Everything. This in turn allowed the development of practical fusion power, gravitic lift and jump drive. The theory has been forgotten upon occasion, in different places, for different lengths of time. But thankfully for civilization, it's too widespread to ever be completely lost. When humans from Terra finally discovered it as well, they found that the galaxy was already full of races too busy with their own concerns to give newbies the time of day."
