You read the article, or didn't. It's a little light on details.
I'd have to assume, based on the illustrations, the railgun round is smaller and/or lighter and gets it's impact energy from higher speed and some method of internal guidance.
Smaller diameter also means more aerodynamic, other factors equal, which has to help with range, too.
