oh, and while I'm here.

Have just delivered the lecture.  Timing much better this year.  *None* of the 25 had heard of this year (just 1 of 30 last year).  Difficult to gauge their actual interest... but I can certainly say I enthused about the subject.  :-)

and if anyone wants to have a go at the activity I included to get them thinking Traveller and 'forcing' some creativity, here you go:
(note there's six options each time so you can pick with a d6)

pick a random UPP:

A69546

568B97

98AB74

677749

B559AA

587B69

(I had a decode for this on the slide)

pick a random character 'type':

Drifter

Merchant

StarNavy (I wanted them to be clear this wasn't wet navy)

Noble

Scholar

Scout

pick a random news headline from today's newspaper:
British trio stopped on way to join Islamic state
At long last a burial fit for a king
Pontiff feels that he has little time left
185mph cyclone wipes out Pacific community
Shazam is considering a float to the tune of $1bn
Remote homes will be the first on ultrafast internet highway

add a conflict.
Sketch a possible Traveller adventure in a couple of sentences.

(my examples - in case everyone's brains froze in the lecture including mine - were ready in the background and are attached but I'm sure you can do better)

(Bonus point for spotting the newspaper I raided this morning...)

Examples:

Perhaps a strong noble – the second son of a Marquis ruling 2 or 3 worlds who is on the scene (on holiday?) when a natural disaster strikes (CONFLICT: further battles against the natural world, logistical difficulties, or perhaps people fighting over resources)

Or an intelligent but rough and ready scout who is helping install the communications infrastructure on a newly developing world well off the beaten track (CONFLICT: anything from technical difficulties to a harsh environment)

Or an elderly (perhaps rather weak) merchant character who has built up a trade company which is now ready to join the big league corporations on the stock exchange (CONFLICT: competitors trying to destabilize the company or a crucial shipment which has gone astray and must be delivered before they can be listed)

Or three low social standing drifters looking to join a mercenary outfit that’s in the thick of some combat action (CONFLICT: straightforward combat action; or difficulties getting to the combat zone; or difficulties getting extracted after things have gone pear-shaped)

Or a high political intrigue adventure when the Empress makes the unheard of announcement she’s going to stand down because of ill-health (CONFLICT: who’s next in line – are there several contenders?  What’s going to happen to some of her pet projects?  Will other polities see a weakness they can exploit – from ambassadorial shenanigans to outright invasion?)

Or a high ranking naval officer who is responsible for the security surrounding the burial of an important local dignitary (CONFLICT: perhaps the mercenary outfit above wants to disrupt proceedings…)

Not only does that look familiar i even have the same make bookshelves :-)

Ah!  IKEA "Billy" standard!  Beech IIRC.  Though I think they're just beginning to bow under the weight - which is fair enough given what gets packed onto them.

Mine are a little less organized tho

Well I am a librarian in my other life. :-)

I should say that this was at least the second arrangement I went through before taking the photos.  At one point I had the language material (CT Japanese and German, borderline CT/MT Spanish, Finnish 2300AD[1]) in their respective 'eras' but in the end it was more fun to group them together. (Although even so I couldn't be bothered to move all the Mongoose French and German stuff...)

I would also put the Mongoose LBBs and the BITS books elsewhere if space were unlimited, but that maximised shelf packing by having them with the other small format items.  What you can't see is that things like the GDW LBBs and the MMT volumes are all in the proper order - of course.  (Shame that MT & TNE doesn't have any proper order although I generally group the DGP stuff together).  And usually I have the Mongoose adventures *after* the supplements (but before the Third Imperium line) - but they fitted the shelves better this way.

Of course I don't have this trouble with the electronic stuff...

[1] And I have an old glossy Swedish fanzine which lives with the small format digest books rather than the language material.  I keep meaning to translate it... though I doubt anyone cares.
