They've done it on every commercial flight I've been on. Maybe it's just trrrraaaadiition?

I don't know what type of aircraft you were in, but I can see this
happening if the entire aircraft overhead lights are on a single
circuit, cockpit and cabin both, and the pilot wanted to cut glare from
the overheads onto the instruments. Time-of-day is possibly also a
factor; I'd consider it more likely for twilight or night flights than
day flights. One thing I'm sure _isn't_ the reason is because the power
plant can't generate enough power to handle both the engines and the
lights... :)
