My vision of what engineering looks like especially at the higher TLs would be a "lights out" engineering space.  Past a certain bulkhead there are no living things in there but there's a lot of monitoring and robotic devices keeping a lid on things.  

Sensors in engineering would feed data to a space called Engineering Central where the engineers stand watch (sit watch?) and keep an eye on things.
