I recall that, when Terra was captured during the 4thFW, the sols began an 'Operation Phoenix' in which personnel were put into long-term cryo w/i the system. There were also some sci-fi stories in Analog, way-back-when, where an entire space civ was presented as using long-term 'sleep' to extend lives, but, air, only on 'Capital'.The 'rulers' were allowed to sleep the longest, presumably thus ensuring continuity.p.s. it was expensive so only the wealthy & politicos were afforded the opportunity.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------On Thursday, February 4, 2021, 02:09:57 PM MST, Kurt Feltenberger <xxxxxx@thepaw.org> wrote:I seem to remember reading an article about low berths in either theoriginal TAS or maybe MTJ about how professional athletes and performersused low berths as a way to "extend their shelf life" by going into thembetween seasons and jobs. This, the article suggested, allowed aprofessional athlete to have almost twice the effective career length ashe would have had otherwise, being in the low berth for about half ayear at a stretch. Performers had a somewhat longer window as theywould only be "thawed" for a few months to do the production and then goback under until something else of value came along. Given the way wecan do deep fakes, and extrapolating that and green screen technology,I'm not sure there will even be live performers for vid shows, butthat's another thread entirely. What really kicked off this thought exercise was something I'm currentlywriting. One of the characters has two puppies that he's going to showin the puppy class at the dog show, and I started wondering how a lowberth would be able to extend a show dog's career. Once they win theirChampionship title, the next is Grand Champion and beyond that it's allribbons for the "such a good dog!" wall. It takes a year, maybe two ormore depending on how often the dog is shown and how many dogs are ineach show. Sometimes, once a dog becomes a Champion, the handler willretire it and only show the dog in certain shows. This would work with just about any type of competition that used ananimal; horse races, poni races, whatever. It would allow the effectivecareer to be extended to several times that of a normal lifetime, whilealso allowing the animal to be steadily bred.Beyond this, I could also see certain governments using the frozen watchconcept writ large; they want a large military, but rather than havefive million people under arms, they put three million in dispersedbunkers on extended "tours" of duty and only raise them when they're needed.Anyway, I'm curious how others might use the low berth in an unexpectedmanner.--Kurt Feltenberger“Before today, I was scared to live, after today, I'm scared I'm not living enough." - Me-----The Traveller Mailing ListArchives at http://archives.simplelists.com/tmlReport problems to xxxxxx@simplelists.comTo unsubscribe from this list please go to-----
