That's in houserule territory, so I'm not surprised. Taking a second
career before play begins is a perk of being a Vargr.

Note that Combat Rifleman does not include Autorifle, for some reason.

Honestly, that one I call an errata.

Another silliness with that was that Army guys started with Combat
Rifleman-1, but were quite likely to be getting advances in 'Gun
Combat', which doesn't allow combat Rifleman as a choice.

Yes, c'est stupid! The minute you get CRM, all other Rifle related skill acquisitions should translate into CRM.

Thus if they
don't want to end up with two skills that mostly overlap (Rifleman and
Combat Rifleman) they'll probably do something like stack SMG (seeing as
they get a level in it when commissioned). It could end up all a bit
strange.

Yes, taking a starting background skill in an odd weapon (when rifle would make sense if you were from an Ag planet) just so as not to get stacked over by CRM in the military generation systems is.... bizarre.

One thing we always used to do was allow you to roll your d6 for a
skill, and *then* choose which table it came from. Thus if you were
rolling from someone in the Army, and you rolled a '2' you could then
choose from +1 Dex, Grav Vehicle, Mechanical, or (if Edu 8+) Tactics
(assuming MegaTraveller).

I suppose that's kind of the opposite of pick your table then roll. I could see an advantage to doing it that way. Good idea!
