Oh! I missed it because my family always used them interchangeably. Except the large Sunday midday meal was always Dinner. The family is from the upper Midwest.

My parents grew up in South Dakota with Diner at noon and Supper in the evening. Moving around as a military brat lunch was at noon and dinner or supper is the evening meal.

OK, you all have lost me. Who said what that is different?
I have gone back over the conversation and have seen no phrase that seems different to me.

The difference is dinner and supper.
Dinner is the main meal of the day taken either at mid day or in the evening. While supper is taken in the evening and is a light meal.
