I've definitely tried to drag those sorts of assumptions, if not into the 57th Century then at least into the 21st Century. But this has happened along the way in Traveller too. Consider, for example, the fate of the Regency and of the Zhodani--and even Virus!--in the TNE 1248 setting.

Haven't read that so I have no perspective. The destruction of the Regency was sad to me as I think it was an entity with reasonable goals at the outset. It may also have had an untennable position from the get-go.
