AFAIK, it is true.

Which, to me, is so very surprising, as MM, in his own words, did spend a tour in VietNam, with the US Army, which was choc-a-bloc with WO's who were chopper pilots.

p.s. I didn't know there was a WO5 in the US. From the time I was a child I was only aware of four grades of WO.
