The Kindle Unlimited program on Amazon can be a worthwhile way of finding sci-fi books, but I found that I prefer to spend a bit more and chase series I have found I enjoy with individual purchases.Hi Evyn,
To keep reading on a tighter budget, I would suggest looking into the *free* books at https://www.baen.com/allbooks/category/index/id/2012,2005. It's generally the early books in series, where the publisher and author are hoping to get you attracted to the larger worlds. You can still use your Kindle device/app, you just email the downloaded file to an email address you'll find in your Kindle settings to get the book to a specific device.
In the meantime, I highly recommend The Backwards Mask by Matthew Carson and Shadow of the Storm by Michael Dougherty. Both are explicitly Traveller universe books.
And you'll find much good reading at https://www.freelancetraveller.com/, both the magazine and inside the Raconteurs' Rest section.
