Until MT there was nothing that said they had their own power plant, and
so no reason that they would or would not need external power.

Wasn't there an earlier post that indicated that MM wrote an article in '85 where he stated that it was the regular PP, switched into a special low efficiency, high output mode that 'charged' the jump 'system'?
Yes, Marc Miller wrote the article Jumpspace in GDW JTAS 24. From p. 35 "...Normally, only a fusion power plan can supply this energy. Some alternate systems make used of solar power generators (which operate much more slowly), or anti-matter power system (rare and very high-tech)."

Combined with details form the Annic Nova and Express Boat I am not sure if it is a regular fusion power plant used by the ship or, per knowledge from CT LBB 2 1977, if the power plant is part of the jump drive.
Also, ISTR that MM wasn't much involved with GDW by the time MT came out, perhaps contributing to the decision to have DGP take the lead on that?
I have no idea of what happened when MT came out since the group had moved onto BattleTech.
