ISTR also a mention the the jump drive includes a special purpose power plant that, somehow, manages to convert all that fuel w/i a very short period of time.

The problem with that is if they can store that much power in a smaller space than batteries or a power plant of normal function, why would they not be using these in other areas of technology?
If you invent a tech that solves a problem better than other techs in the universe, then why is it only used in one application?

You'll have to consult with the professors of hyperspace engineering at the U of Regina as no one this planet has the requisite understanding of hyperspatial physics to answer that question.

This reminds me of an episode of 'Stargate SG1' in it's first season where they encounter a race so advanced that even the 'snakeheads' have to leave them alone.
One of then tries to explain something to the lady on the team who is also the scientific genius & she say, "Oh yes, you mean like <tecnobabble)". At which point the 'superior being' smiles condescendingly & states, "We used to that that"!
