Actually, just the act of opening the doors, doesn't matter if they are sliding. will definitely affect the airflow over the fuselage & thus the drag.
(My father flew both B-17's & B-24's in WWII & he mentioned that the effect was significant even though the airspeed was under 200mph)

Also, sometimes (as was the case w/ the ME-410, also in WWII, the 'load' in the bomb bay will 'protrude' belneath the a/c.
(In the case of the '410, the germans would sometimes fit a 'gunpack' into the bomb bay to increase firepower when intercepting allied 'heavies')

Whether or not this would be significant enough to alter 'drag' & also whether temporary or permanent is the real question, IMO.

No. When you open a missile bay, you stick the missile out into the airflow while it's still attached to the rail. With a bomb bay, The bombs stay inside until they're released. When you release them and they enter the airflow, they're not attached to the aircraft, so the drag only affects the bombs themselves.

Hello all,

1. Missile Bay versus Internal Bomb Bay

MT Consolidated Errata v2.21 (02/23/2013) p. 62 added a missile bay which I believe is similar the the internal bays used by the F-102 and F-106. The Missile Bay entry on errata indicates that the bay has a drag of (1) which I take to mean when the bay is opened to launch a missile or rocket.

MT COACC Weapon Mounts Table p. 33 has the internal bomb bay as having a Drag of 0 (zero). I agree that with the bomb bay doors closed the Drag is zero, however when the doors are open drag is created. I believe that the Bomb Bay Drag should be changed for 0 to (1).

Is changing the internal bomb bay Drag to (1) a good idea?
