We used tokens from Wiley and Science Direct for article-level access for some very expensive journals, until we switched to Copyright Clearance Center's Get It Now in about 2016. We don't have an $50K titles, but we have some that are very high for us, which we need access to. If usage is low, it's definitely more affordable for us to pay by the article. If usage is very high, we just have to keep the very expensive subscription, but at least it's justified. Get It Now has proved to be a workable solution for us, but pricing does creep up, and there's that discomfort of not feeling like we have ownership of the journal subscription. But sometimes I think those days are gone, for us.
CCC Get it Now is integrated into our Alma link resolver, so users see the option to order the article where it's activated. Delivery takes between 15 minutes and 2 hours, typically.
We have activated a total of about 15 Get it Now journal titles. At this time of year, that can generate monthly invoices of about 2,000.00, and we have been averaging about 9 or 10,000 per year since 2016. We are a small school, under 2500 FTE.
Hope this is helpful. Good luck,
Jane

Subject: [SERIALST] Pay per view journals
Has anyone had experience with pay-per-view journals? We have one Elsevier title that is $50K a year. Our scientists let us know yesterday they do not need every article from every journal issue.
Thanks in advance.
