FACULTY OPENING
Electronic Cataloging and Metadata Coordinator

The University of Virginia Library is seeking a creative, enthusiastic
librarian who will help to shape and coordinate the future of the Library's
digital cataloging endeavors within a dynamic and changing environment.
The Library is seeking to further diversify its workforce in the belief
that the library of the 21st century should provide a broad spectrum of
experiences and outlooks.

Environment:

The Library is a leader in developing the digital library, with electronic
centers for texts; digital images, music and media; geospatial and
statistical data; and rare books and manuscripts.  The Library system
consists of eleven libraries, with independent libraries for health
sciences, law, and business. The libraries serve 12,000 undergraduates,
6,000 graduate students and 1,600 teaching faculty. The Library's homepage

Academical Village and the historic Grounds provide a gracious backdrop for
teaching, learning, and research.

Responsibilities:

The Electronic Cataloging and Metadata Coordinator has general faculty
status and reports to the Director of Cataloging Services; coordinates the
cataloging of electronic/digital materials with MARC records in VIRGO (the
library's online catalog) and the creation of non-MARC metadata records for
the library's digital library database; monitors trends in metadata and
cataloging of electronic resources; develops plans and methods for
providing appropriate access to all forms of electronic resources; serves
as liaison to the Electronic Centers and to Digital Library Research &
Development. The Coordinator creates original cataloging records and
original non-MARC metadata records, and is a member of the Cataloging
Supervisory Team.  The full position description can be found at

Qualifications:

Master's degree in library science (preferred) or master's degree in a
related field required.  Experience with Anglo-American Cataloging Rules,
2nd edition, rev., Library of Congress classification and subject headings
(or other thesauri), MARC formats, and automated library systems.
Familiarity with established and emerging metadata standards (TEI, EAD,
Dublin Core, etc.).   Familiarity with mark-up languages (SGML, HTML, XML).
Familiarity with or ability to learn  Perl, UNIX and Z39.50. Effective
organizational, communication, supervisory, and interpersonal skills.
Strong service orientation. Commitment to professional growth and
development.  Reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages preferred.

Salary and Benefits: Salary competitive, depending on qualifications, from
$31,000.  The University of Virginia offers excellent benefits.
