The "Task Force on the Location of Materials Needing Special Protection"
at
the University of Iowa Libraries would greatly appreciate advice on
methods
other libraries have devised to protect serial volumes deemed to be
"medium
rare" but not eligible for assignment to the Special Collections
Department.

We are considering titles such as the early volumes of the Ladies Home
Journal and the Saturday Evening Post; film journals which contain
many
photographs of the stars; popular culture titles such as Heavy Metal,
Mad,
and Playboy.

We hope to design a better plan for certain serials now shelved with all
the other current issues and bound periodicals in our general
collection.
Playboy and the film journals are assigned to the Reserve Reading Room.
However, Reserve has no photocopy machines within its confines and the
double doors to the room are unsupervised and have no security devices.
Patrons are spposed to bring the Reserve materials to a service desk
near
the door and check them out.

If you send messages directly to me, I will summarize them and post them
to
the list.

Thank you.
