POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES:
Provides copy and original cataloging and classification in all
subject fields for bibliographic materials in a variety of formats and
languages. Searches and verifies bibliographic data with materials in
hand using a variety of programs, databases, and types of hardware.
Works with Library Specialists to verify the accuracy of
bibliographic, holdings, and authority records in the online catalog.
Establishes and maintains authority files. Contributes to the
development of divisional policies and procedures. Communicates with
CUL units, as appropriate, when bibliographic problems or questions
arise regarding materials. Detects and corrects errors on access
points, locations, and filtering indicators and solves problems
resulting from conversion or policy changes. Assists in preparing
statistical and textual reports. Holds membership on the Bibliographic
Control Team. Performs other duties as requested by the Director of
Bibliographic Control or the Director of Financial Management in the
Center for Information Processing.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED: M.L.S. degree from an ALA accredited library school with
courses in cataloging; broad educational background; cataloging
proficiency in at least one foreign language; knowledge of AACR2,
LCSH, Library of Congress classification schedules, and OCLC
cataloging procedures. Also, organizational skills, with emphasis on
accuracy, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships. Ability to work in a team environment, to follow
established procedures, and to perform work requiring considerable
attention to detail and accuracy. Candidate should have the
capability of recognizing unusual or problematic situations which need
to be brought to the attention of a supervisor; ability to work at a
computer station for extended periods of time, flexibility to respond
to changes in the work environment, ability to communicate effectively
both verbally and written, and the ability to prioritize and meet
appropriate deadlines and production quotas.
DESIRED: Demonstrated experience in serials cataloging or organizing
electronic and digital resources; experience with organizing
networked resources; experience and knowledge of automation systems
(Voyager); demonstrated ability to coordinate projects and work
activities in a cooperative, collegial environment; record of
innovation and successful implementation of change; record of
professional service and/or research.
NOTE: In addition to core management and service responsibilities, all
CUL staff participate in teams which cross service boundaries. All
staff must be prepared to adapt to flexible organizational patterns
and changing work environments. Position duties and responsibilities
will change as the libraries respond to new priorities and users'
research needs. The libraries will adopt new directions and
information technology as appropriate, update policies and procedures
as necessary, and periodically reevaluate collections, access,
services, operations and programs. Each librarian is expected to
develop a progressively more substantive professional scholarly
record.
SALARY: $30,000 minimum, commensurate with experience. SMU offers a
