Nominations and applications are invited for the newly defined position of Assistant Dean for Scholarly Communication, University of Kansas Libraries. The Assistant Dean is responsible for shaping the University of Kansas (KU) Libraries' mix of traditional and emerging information resources in support of the instructional and research missions of the University. This individual will coordinate programs for collection development and assessment, acquisitions, electronic access, resource sharing, and preservation. This individual will take the leadership role in educating both teaching faculty and library staff on scholarly communication issues and on innovative approaches to collection development. The Assistant Dean for Scholarly Communication will actively participate in library-wide planning and decision making as a member of the administrative team of the University Libraries, and will serve on other library and University councils and committees as appropriate. This individual will represent the Libraries' collection and scholarly communication interests to the University, state, region, nation and worldwide as appropriate. The individual will also contribute to the profession through library, university and professional service, and scholarly activities. SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Assistant Dean for Scholarly Communication is responsible for: Leadership and management of collection development of the University Libraries: � provides leadership and coordinates the collection development activities of 30+ subject specialists; � oversees training and evaluation of collection activities for subject specialists; � coordinates development of assessment tools to measure and evaluate the effectiveness of collections; � oversees a materials budget of $4.7 million; � plays a leading role in collaborative collection development; for example, within the State, the Big 12 Plus, CRL, etc. Leadership of: � Retrieval Services (monographic and serial acquisitions, interlibrary loan and document delivery); � the Libraries Preservation Department; � Electronic Information resources. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: The Assistant Dean for Scholarly Communication will report to the Dean of Libraries. Units and/or staff reporting to the Assistant Dean include: Electronic Information Librarian; the Coordinator for Science and Engineering Resources and Services; Retrieval Services; Preservation; and several subject bibliographers. QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate for Assistant Dean for Collections and Scholarly Communication at the University of Kansas Libraries must possess the following: � MLS from an ALA accredited program; � a record of successful and progressively more responsible experience in collection development in an academic or research library, including bibliographic selection and personnel and budget management; � demonstrated understanding of the issues and trends in collection development and scholarly communication including knowledge of technological issues related to access and ownership; � demonstrated ability to provide innovative and effective leadership in a collegial environment including successful supervisory experience; � ability to establish productive, effective working relationships within the Libraries, the university, and the profession; � a record of promoting cooperative and collaborative efforts among institutions; � a record of scholarship and service; � a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse constituencies; � demonstrated experience with applied information technologies; � an understanding of the academic environment and the role of libraries in support of teaching, learning, and scholarship. In addition, the following qualifications are highly desirable: � advanced subject degree; � experience with acquisitions, serials, interlibrary loan, document delivery or preservation; � knowledge of license issues and intellectual property issues. TERMS OF APPOINTMENT: Librarians at the University of Kansas are members of the University faculty, with full participation in the University Senate and the Faculty Senate, as well as the Library Faculty Assembly. The appointment of the Assistant Dean is renewable annually, with a formal review not more than 5 years after initial appointment. The successful candidate for Assistant Dean should be eligible for tenure upon appointment.
