Original & Special Materials Cataloging
Columbia University seeks an experienced catalog librarian
to coordinate cataloging activities related to monographic
reproduction, videos and maps. Reporting to the Head of
Original and Special Materials Cataloging, the incumbent
will provide full (or other appropriate level) original
cataloging for materials in a variety of print, non-print
and digital formats. This position has responsibility for
monitoring the preservation and commercial microform
cataloging workflows and backlogs. It also includes
assigning, training and revising one support staff involved
in copy cataloging microforms; providing back-up and
assistance to other catalog librarians as needed; and
keeping abreast of methods, guidelines and approaches for
the bibliographic control of library materials. Catalogers
contribute to planning, policy and procedure development.
The Original and Special Materials Cataloging Department
(14.5 professionals and 12 support staff) provides
cataloging for all serials, non-book formats and electronic
resources, and specialized materials such as rare books,
Middle East languages, art and architecture, as well as
original cataloging for all subjects and formats.
In addition to an accredited MLS, requirements are:
previous experience cataloging reproductions at a
professional level; working knowledge of cataloging
principles and procedures including AACR2R, LC Subject
Headings and Classification, and USMARC formats; working
knowledge of standard bibliographic and other reference
tools; strong working knowledge in two European languages;
broad subject background; and familiarity with a range of
automated processing activities. Additional requirements
include effective verbal and written communication skills;
experience in procedure development and writing
documentation; good organization skills; and aptitude for
complex, analytical and detailed work. Experience with
NOTIS, OCLC and/or RLIN and experience in a large research
library desirable. Also desirable: previous supervisory
and training experience; serials cataloging experience;
working knowledge of Italian, Spanish, or a Scandinavian
language; background in the social sciences.
Salary ranges are: Librarian I: $37,500 - $46,875;
Librarian II: $39,500 - $53,325; Librarian III: $42,500
- $63,750. Excellent benefits include assistance with
