Librarian II - Michigan Newspaper Project Manager
and
Librarian I - Cataloger, Michigan Newspaper Project
The Library of Michigan is a nationally recognized, visible, electronic
and traditional library and leadership development center serving as a
vital information resource to the legislature, state government and
citizens of Michigan.
POSITION: Librarian II - Michigan Newspaper Project Manager
DIVISION: Collection Management Services
SALARY: (H) $14.81 per hour*
*Hourly wage not to exceed amount indicated in the grant
STATUS: Part-time (30-39 hours per week)
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: Under the general supervision of the
Collection Management Services Division Director, this individual
manages the day-to-day activities of the Michigan Newspaper Project
(MNP), including development of project documents, cataloging
newspapers, and planning for additional phases of the project. Leads MNP
staff in developing a strategic plan for bibliographic control and
preservation. Creates original and complex copy cataloging of American
newspapers from original newspapers or microfilm copies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION:
EDUCATION: The job requires a Master's degree in Library Science from
an ALA accredited school.
EXPERIENCE: Requires a minimum of two years of professional cataloging
experience. Grant writing experience. OCLC and
serials cataloging, highly desirable. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift 40 pounds. Valid Michigan
driver's license. Travel required. Experience with personal computers.
POSITION: Librarian I - Cataloger
DIVISION: Collection Management Services
SALARY RANGE: (G) $13.38 per hour*
*Hourly wage not to exceed amount indicated in grant
STATUS: Part-time (30-39 hours per week)
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: Under the direction of the Michigan
Newspaper Project (MNP) Manager, the newspaper cataloger serves as a
cataloger of original and microfilm newspapers held at various Michigan
libraries, as part of the National Endowment for the Humanities'(NEH)
Michigan Newspaper Project. Cataloging includes creating original
records
or enhancing existing bibliographic records to full CONSER/USNP
standards. May include evening and weekend hours.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION:
EDUCATION: This position requires a Master's degree in Library Science
from an ALA accredited school.
EXPERIENCE: This is an entry-level position; no specific library
experience is required. Preferred experience with special cataloging
projects and newspaper cataloging. Preferred experience with OCLC
bibliographic and local data records. Preservation experience desired.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to lift 40 pounds. Valid
Michigan drivers license. Travel required.
Experience with personal computers.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The Michigan Newspaper Project is part of the
United States Newspaper Program, which is funded by a grant from the
National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), and receives technical
assistance from the Library of Congress. This position is contingent on
NEH funding.
