VACANCY NOTICE

POSITION: Monographic Cataloger

RESPONSIBILITIES: Prepares original cataloging and classification for
monographs in English and other Western European languages, including
state and international documents.  Edits and upgrades difficult copy,
especially for backlog, state and international documents, gift and
non-English language materials.  Does rush cataloging for materials upon
request.  Catalogs rare books and manuscripts for the Libraries� Special
Collections.  Acts as a resource person for copy catalogers on questions
of cataloging and classification.  May be assigned projects which relate
to areas of primary responsibility.  Research, publication and service to
the Libraries, University and profession are expected to satisfy criteria
for continuing appointment and promotion.  Reports to Head of Cataloging.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required: Graduate degree in librarianship from an
ALA-accredited institution or foreign equivalent.  Knowledge of MARC and
AACR2;  knowledge of at least one Western European language in addition to
English.  Excellent written and oral communication skills.  Preferred: Two
years experience in cataloging on a bibliographic utility; experience with
an additional automated cataloging system.

SALARY: Commensurate with education and experience.  Minimum: Assistant
Librarian, $30,000; Senior Assistant Librarian, $34,000.

TERMS & BENEFITS: Twelve month appointment; sick leave and annual leave @
1.25 days each per month; health insurance, major medical or Health
Maintenance Organization.  Social Security coverage.  TIAA/CREF or New
York State Teachers Retirement available (employee contribution rate =
3%).

public institution of higher education in New York.  Established in 1844,
Albany celebrated its sesquicentennial in 1994.  Designated as a
University Center of the State University of New York, Albany has a broad
mission of undergraduate and graduate education, research and public
service.  More than 16,000 students are enrolled in the eight
degree-granting schools and colleges of the University, which is noted for
its achievement of both diversity and excellence.

The Albany area provides a wide range of cultural and recreational
opportunities.  The University is located in New York�s Capital Region,
150 miles north of New York city, 150 miles west of Boston.  The Capital
Region has a population of approximately 750,000.
