Wayne State University is a Carnegie Research University I with a
demonstrated commitment to teaching and learning excellence. The
university's enrollment of nearly 33,000 (20,000 undergraduates) makes it
the 18th largest university in the United States. The university is located
in an attractive urban setting, surrounded by museums, theaters and
corporate offices easily accessible from several interstate freeways and
Canada. The University Library System consists of the Undergraduate,
Purdy/Kresge, Science and Engineering, Shiffman Medical, and the Neef Law
Libraries; Media Services; the graduate Library and Information Science
Program; the Office for Teaching and Learning and the University Press.

TECHNICAL SERVICES AND SYSTEMS DEPARTMENT
Head of Cataloging

The Technical Services and Systems Department provides centralized services
to all units of the Library System, including acquisitions, cataloging and
information systems support. Wayne State is the host site for the Detroit
Area Library Network (DALNET) Online System. This computer system is shared
by 20 academic, public and professional libraries and provides access to
more than 8 million items through online catalogs of 4.5 million records.
Work is under way to complete their migration over the next year from the
NOTIS system to the Horizon system and to build a metropolitan information
hub for the member libraries. The information hub will include digitized
special collections as well as traditional catalogs and indexes.

Technical Services staff provide online cataloging for all types of
materials-print, media and electronic-for Wayne State, as well as contract
cataloging for some DALNET member libraries. Wayne State contributes
records to the OCLC online union catalog and to the Library of Congress
NACO database. Wayne State takes a leadership role in setting standards and
providing quality control services for the DALNET Online Catalog.  More

Wayne State University seeks candidates with credentials to qualify for the
rank of Librarian II, III or IV for a full-time librarian position in the
Employment Security System. A record of progressive professional and/or
scholarly development is required.

POSITION AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Reports to the Director of Technical Services and Systems, who reports to
the Dean of Libraries. Provides leadership, supervision and training for
the Cataloging Team, with up to 11 original and copy catalogers and staff
responsible for local authority control and authority records submitted to
NACO; performs monographic and serial cataloging with related authority
work for all types of materials, including rare books and other special
materials; resolves difficult cataloging problems; helps develop retrieval
systems for electronic resources and digitized collections; manages special
cataloging projects and contract cataloging services; keeps up with
developments in the field and recommends participation in cooperative
projects, adoption of standards and local policies; provides leadership for
online cataloging and authority control using the Horizon client/server
system in a consortium environment; serves on Library System and DALNET
committees; participates as part of the Technical Services and Systems
Management Team; and performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:  Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school;
professional experience in an academic research library; substantial
cataloging experience; knowledge of one or more foreign languages;
experience with OCLC and with a local integrated library system;
supervisory experience; excellent verbal and written communication skills;
and credentials to qualify for a Librarian II/III/IV classification with
the University Library System.

Preferred:  Experience with national cooperative cataloging projects such
as NACO or BIBCO; experience with Ameritech Horizon library information
system; experience organizing electronic or digitized resources for
retrieval, including SGML or other text-encoding systems; and experience
with team development and total quality management.

PURDY/KRESGE LIBRARY
Electronics Reference Librarian I/II/III

POSITION AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Purdy/Kresge Library supports the research and instructional programs
in the humanities, social sciences and business for the upper level
undergraduates, graduate students and faculty. The Electronics Reference
librarian position is responsible for the development and maintenance of
the Purdy/Kresge Library's web site; monitor and maintains access to
electronic information resources; coordinates hardware and software support
for the Purdy/Kresge Library's instructional lab and networked environment
and serves as a liaison to the University Libraries' Systems Department.
The Librarian provides general reference service; performs collection
development for assigned subject areas; establishes good faculty liaison
contacts; and provides instructional sessions for assigned subject areas
and specialized programs.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:  Master's degree from an ALA accredited library school, reference
experience in an academic, research or large public library, experience
with microcomputer applications in a networked environment, experience with
WWW page creation and WWW searching, demonstrated organizational and
interpersonal communication skills, excellent written and verbal
communication skills.

Preferred:  Academic degree in the social sciences highly desired,
effective teaching and instructional skills, demonstrated commitment to
public service.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
Minimum salary: Librarian I: $34,000; Librarian II: $37,000; Librarian III:
$40,000, 22 days vacation per year and excellent fringe benefits, including
TIAA/CREF or Fidelity.
