Subject: Print Out of An Electronic Journal
Dear Serialists,
Two things:
I need some help on how to handle an electronic journal (i.e. MMWR) which we
print out and store as a hard copy. I've searched the Serialist archives
and I believe I've read the major guideline documents from OCLC and LC. We
are using the 2 record approach (see my additional question). I don't know
if I treat the hard copy as the original print version or do I need to
designate that it is a reproduction somehow. MMWR is available in pdf
format and other than size is a mirror of the original. On the other hand,
we have other titles that we print out and store the hard copy which do not
resemble the original journal at all. I am at a lost as to how to handle
these particular print items.
We belong to UCMP (Union Catalog of Medical Periodicals ONline) and we just
received their latest newsletter. They are of the "opinion that the library
user's access to information is impeded when it is necessary to quit one
library record and proceed to another in order to obtain essentially the
same information, just in a different medium." Before I go through and
catalog any more electronic journals using the 2 record approach, how are
users finding this approach? We tend to follow LC but if it really makes it
harder on the users maybe the 1 record approach is better in the end. Any
feedback on this issue would be very much appreciated.
If you have any comments or know of any sources please respond directly to
me.
Thanks,
Julie
