Subject: journal barcodes

Our university publishes an annual literary journal; the staff is
interested in barcoding the issues, but isn't sure how to go about it
and has asked if I can find out anything for them -- they were simply
going to have a barcode printed on the cover, but aren't sure how to get
the correct information onto the barcode, or indeed even what the
correct information should include.  Can anyone out there offer any
concrete suggestions?  Who should they contact?  I'm not even sure if
they have an ISSN for the journal -- they mentioned ISBN, but seemed a
little hazy about the whole thing.

They have an issue coming out this next month -- is it possible to get
the information in time for that printing?

All suggestions welcome!

I know, I know, this is something I should probably know about and be
able to answer in my sleep, but I've been out of serials acquisitions
for too long....
