San Jos� State University invites nominations and applications for the
position of University Librarian.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will provide the University with strong and
creative leadership in the areas of collections, library services and
effective management of about 75 professional librarians and
paraprofessional staff.  The University Librarian is responsible for
maintaining and strengthening community ties and pursuing external
funding.

 The University Librarian will also have a major role in the proposed
Joint Use Library with the City of San Jos� expected to open in the year
2004.

Candidates should have a commitment to diversity.

QUALIFICATIONS

* Masters Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program
required; an earned doctorate in a subject area preferred;
* Eligible for tenure as library faculty and/or in School of Library and

Information Science;
* Minimum of five years in academic library positions of increasing
responsibility;
* Experience with, awareness of, and sensitivity to the educational
goals of a multi-cultural population and active participation in expanding
educational and professional opportunities to populations currently
underserved or underrepresented;
* Effectiveness in working with community leaders in a multi-cultural
community;
* Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a diverse campus
community, both orally and in writing;
* Scholarly, professional, or creative achievement;
* Proven administrative experience, including academic planning and
development, personnel, information technology, and fiscal management;
experience with building planning is highly desirable;
* Ability to work well in a system of shared governance;
* Ability to provide academic executive leadership in a collaborative
and collegial manner.

THE UNIVERSITY
San Jos� State University is California's oldest institution of public
higher learning.  The campus is located on the southern end of the San
Francisco Bay in downtown San Jos� (population 800,000), hub of the
world-famous Silicon Valley high-technology research and development
center.  SJSU enrolls approximately 27,000 students and has about 750
tenured or tenure-track faculty.  The University library, with an annual
budget of $5.5 million, has more than one million volumes plus extensive
collections of electronic resources, periodicals, maps, and recordings.
SJSU is a member of the 22-campus California State University, the largest
public senior postsecondary education system in the nation. The region
enjoys an excellent year-round climate and has convenient access to many
of California's popular natural, recreational, and cultural attractions.

JOINT UNIVERSITY-CITY LIBRARY
The University is entering into an agreement with the City of San Jos� to
construct a library building on the campus that will house the University
library and the City's main library.  The University and the City will
retain their own library organizations and the University Librarian and
the City Librarian will serve as co-managers of the joint facility which
is scheduled to open in 2004.

ACADEMIC ADMINISTRATION
The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs is the chief academic
officer of the University.  Academic programs are delivered by faculty in
the various departments and schools, which are organized into eight
colleges.  The University Librarian reports to the Provost, as do the
eight college deans, the Dean for Continuing Education, four associate
vice presidents, and the Director for Academic Services.

The position is available July 1, 1999 with the exact date of appointment
negotiable.  Salary is competitive, dependent upon the qualifications and
experience of the successful candidate, and the benefits package is
excellent.
