Subject: 1999 ALA Midwinter Meeting ALCTS SS Committee to Study Serials              Cataloging

Dear Colleagues:

You are cordially invited to attend and to participate in the ALCTS
Serials Section Committee to Study Serials Cataloging meeting in
Philadelphia.  The schedule and location are:

ALCTS SS Committee to Study Serials Cataloging (CSSC) meeting
Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, 2:00-4:00 pm
Korman Suites Hotel, Ballroom

The AACR Review Groups will complete their work in early January and
the CONSER task force will be meeting all day January 29th to resolve
issues for the final report to the JSC in April. Come and be the first
to hear the results and to provide feedback to Jean Hirons and the task
force.

At the CSSC meeting on Monday, Feb. 1st, the leaders of the AACR Review
Groups, Jean L. Hirons, Les Hawkins, Sara Shatford Layne and Kristin
Lindlan will be reporting on the evolution of terminology and definitions
(redefining 'serial' to 'ongoing' to "serials and serial-like entities");
on changes in the description of successively issued serials that will
align them with integrating entities; on how we think electronic journals
can best be described, based on the results of the survey conducted
by Group 2B; and on what will constitute a title change and which changes
should require a new record.  They'll also discuss the use of uniform
titles and links.
